Here is what I found.... The Ottawa Senators (1917-1934), St. Louis Eagles (1934-1935. Senators relocated here), Pittsburgh Pirates (1925-1930), Philadelphia Quakers (1930-1931. Pirates relocated here), and the Montreal Maroons (1924-1938) became defunct because of major financial struggles during the Great Depression. The NHL started the 1938-39 seasons with 7 teams, and the Brooklyn Americans folded in 1942 because of WWII, which some people say started in one of many ways because of the Depression (or the way not having to do with the Axis powers). 6 teams remain for the next 25 years, or as you probably know them: the Original 6. So is it safe to say the Great Depression played a big role in the NHL? BQ: If there was no Depression, would each of those teams (if any) still be around today.
